no more walls

I've been organizing photographs from my 2002 trip to Europe, and thought I'd scan and post this close up I took of the Berlin Wall. It's from the East Side Gallery, a large outdoor gallery of murals painted on remnants of the wall by artists from all over the world. I felt soothed by the colours in this small section, yet haunted by the overall image. The piece is "Coming Through the Wall" by Kani Alavi.

Here's hoping that in 2006, the world will tear down more walls than it puts up. (Except for the East Side Gallery. I hope it stands for a long time to come.)

I'm all for fewer walls, but maybe more boundaries. So, less talk about what goes on at Chez Mloyd after dark!

Can one live just one day without walls? I think not. It's too daring for my blood.

I was thinking about the idea of walls, and lots has been said on the subject from poets to Presidents. I think Ellen said it best:

Stuffed deer heads on walls are bad enough, but it's worse when they are wearing dark glasses and have streamers in their antlers because then you know they were enjoying themselves at a party when they were shot.

tbl - remember that you owe me $50. Thanks for the Ellen quote. I lurve her.

Mitz - thanks! I try and promote serious blogscussion de temps en temps.

AG - I like walls, except for when they opress people. For instance, the really hot guy in the apartment across from me should have see-through walls, because the fact that they're opaque is opressing me. (He has posted half-naked pictures of himself on gay hook-up sites, so he's obviously ok with people seeing him naked.)

I think you should just go over there with some cookies or something and call it "getting to know your peeps event 2006" or something actually clever. I mean, totally do it. Then comment on the pics to him.
"Walls" are good!

They keep the poor people away from the rich people, the ugly people away from beautiful, etc.
"Walls" keep people in their place!

"Walls" are good!

The 2002 trip? I see you are as about on top of photo organizing as I am.

Schmank-you, Ty. I'm checking out her website as I type this.

Berlin was fun--I'd love to go back someday.

Crucie, it's brutal: organizing photos should not be put off so long. As it is, part of what I got done on Monday was messed up, so I had to fix it lastnight. And it's one of those albums where you can't pop out the pages (binder-style)... brutal!

On the plus side, I discovered that Google Image search comes in handy when your Lonely Planet guides alone can't help you identify exactly what the fuck it was you took a picture of 3.5 years ago.

I just wish oppression of all peoples would just end and we could have peace on Earth and no more poverty. That's all I want.
